In 2016, American college student Otto Warmbier was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor in North Korea after being accused of stealing a propaganda poster. He was returned to the U.S. in a coma in June 2017 and died six days later, with doctors stating he had suffered severe brain damage while imprisoned.
